kennedy-jacket-tobacco-bedford-cord-copy
TCB Denim - Type III Jacket

Jeans have been around since the late 19th century, but for most of the time they've been around, up until at least the mid 1950s, jeans were workwear. Entirely the domain of farmers, miners, dock workers and cowboys.

Following screen wear by a couple of young Hollywood icons, a new idea took hold - jeans could be style. When young mods first got hold of American denim in the early 60s - a relatively unusual sight in the UK at the time - it only fed their insatiable appetite for everything new and sharp. The finicky process of buying a pair of raw 501s and shrinking them in the bath became a ritual in itself.

Decades on, we're all used to the ubiquity of denim. Generally mass produced, lightweight, and lacking the finished edge (selvedge) that was so essential on earlier made pairs. At Jump the Gun we wanted to get as close as possible to that feeling of encountering brand new imported denim for the first time. Where do you get the best American denim? Japan of course.

Our jeans are all made by TCB - the Two Cats Brand. Based in Okayama, Japan, TCB is a tiny ateliers with just over a dozen employees. Making small batch denim, both raw and sanforised, in various vintage fits.

The Type III jacket is what people mean when they say 'jean jacket'. Often called the trucker jacket, the Type III was first introduced in 1960 as a replacement for the Type II, and featured higher breast pockets with a more angled shape, came up slightly longer in the body, and kept the hem adjuster tabs. The front pleats of the Type II are gone however, and in their place are the sharp V shaped seams that give these jackets their characteristic tapered fit. Still a ubiquitous sight right up until today, this jacket is a particular favourite of the Skinhead and Suedehead subcultures.

The TCB Type III is modelled after a 60s Type III, and so it features a slightly deeper collar, slightly longer pocket flaps, and a more fitted shape, than modern examples. It is also the more bluish shade of indigo that is characteristic to 1960s denim.

Fitted and pre-shrunk - you will size up, see our size guide below

13oz San Joaquin Cotton

Two flapped chest pockets

Modelled on original 1960s examples

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0768/3112/9912/files/Untitled-08September2026at14.06.22_11.png?v=1788878344
