What is Jump the Gun?

Jump the Gun is an independent menswear brand based in Brighton, UK. We love the clothes, music, films and popular culture of the late 50s and early 60s, and we try and put some of that style into everything we make. We make slow fashion - good quality pieces that fit properly, last for years, and aren't restricted to one-off trends.

Where are your clothes made?

To ensure quality and fit, the vast majority of the items we stock are our own design and brand. A significant number of our clothes are made right here in the UK, many locally to us. Most of our other items are made in the EU, and some in the USA and Japan also. If you'd like to know the origin of a particular item, please feel free to get in touch.

When will my order arrive?

Wherever possible we will dispatch your goods on the same day your order is placed, excepting weekends. All goods are dispatched by Royal Mail First Class, with the exception of particularly high value items such as suits, which are sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery. If you need an item particularly quickly we can usually arrange faster delivery.

Do I need an account to place an order?

You can always check out as a guest. However creating an account will allow for faster ordering and other benefits.

My size is out of stock! Will you be restocking?

In many cases we will make more of an item. If it's an item that we frequently remake, such as our workwear, you'll be able to sign up for an automatic email notification when we restock. Otherwise, it might be best to call us up on 01273626333, or to email us directly at info@jumpthegun.co.uk

Can I return my order?

Of course, any unsuitable goods can be exchanged or refunded. The best way is to post the order back to us using the label on your packing slip, and include a note telling us if you'd like to exchange or refund. Please note our return labels are not prepaid.

Is Jump the Gun a 'mod' shop?

Jump the Gun is a menswear shop. There's a lot of early sixties influence in many of our designs, and you'll always find sharp tailoring and fitted shirts here. However we don't restrict ourselves to one particular subculture or style, just what feels right for us. Jump the Gun is for people who like clothes.

Isn't all your stuff in very small sizes?

Our clothes often tend to be slimmer fitting, particularly shirts and trousers although definitely not in every case. In addition we do a large range of sizes, generally up to 46" and 48" chest circumference. We've done our best to provide a comprehensive size guide for every item, however if in doubt, do please call us up for sizing advice, or get in touch by email.

  • About Us

Opening the shop door in Brighton 1992 was the start of Jump the Gun. At that time the whole 1960's mod/stylist scene was pretty quiet and the first few years were quite a challenge. All we knew was that scene so we decided to stick with it. Our big break was the birth of Brit-pop around '94 and as we were almost the only shop selling Lonsdale and Ben Shermans it gave us a break. From then on we slowly got a reputation as a go to destination for all things mod.
  • 30 Years of JTG

Deciding to stay as a pure to the original mod style, we started to manufacture our own clothes to our own style and unbranded. Most labels out there became too mainstream to fit in with what we were doing . Thirty plus years later here we are. Still in the same shop on Gardner street in Brighton's North Laine, started by Brothers Jonathan and Adam & run with a passionate team of Jump the Gun workforce.

What our customers have to say

Reviews

Everything I have bought from the shop online has been top-notch quality and the staff are always spot on with advice re sizing. I have had the pleasure of visiting the shop once and it is a great vibe and selection. I recently bought a Harrington and the buying process and delivery was easy and rapid. Top drawer experience all round and I am delighted with my purchase.

Outstanding!!!! I placed my online order after 4pm yesterday and it was delivered today. With "other" retailers any orders placed after 3pm often mean a two day wait at the earliest for delivery. But NOT Jump The Gun. Just exceptional and you now have a new customer!!! Thank you all so very, very much.

My cousin and I decided to go for a day trip to Brighton where we were familiar with the shop name but had never visited the Brighton store. After a little searching around to find the street we arrived, and were not disappointed. The shop was presented in an engaging, and creative manner with a huge amount of classic nostalgia in the mix. The shop assistant was as friendly and informative as we could hope for and we will be heading back there very soon. Excellent experience.

Popped in on my birthday last Friday and got myself a pair of olive sta press trousers that look and fitted perfectly going up one size as recommended by Adam! A big thank you to Adam for his time and advice and also helping me order a work jacket with extra sleeve lengths so it will fit spot on! Just ordered another pair of sta press this time in brown as I now know my sizing and found the website easy to use. Will be down again in the summer to my favourite mod shop!

Called into the shop last week with the intent of putting together suitable outfits for my Son and myself for Goodwood at the weekend. Superb service from Laurie which resulted in me accepting his advice and buying a suit, a tie and a shirt in colours I wouldn’t perhaps otherwise have chosen. Very pleased with the items and the overall experience. I won’t hesitate to recommend you and will consider further purchases myself in future. Thanks very much really enjoyed it.

From my initial phone call to the shop, and subsequent email exchange with Adam, to the actual visit to the store and suit fitting with Peter, the whole retail experience was a complete joy. The team at JTG provided a very knowledgeable, professional and fun service - fully recommend these guys.

Our Team

  • Adam

Jump the Gun's head honcho and main designer, Adam has been a face in the mod scene since the 80s. Having seen trends come and go, from the mod revival to Britpop, Adam knows a thing or two about timeless style. When he's not in the shop you can likely find him broken down on the side of the road on an old scooter.

  • Laurie

The main dogsbody. The baldric of Jump the Gun with over 13 years of service. Laurie's love of menswear extends to mod, western-wear and workwear so don't be afraid to ask him a nagging question. If anyone knows, it's Laurie. Does most of the real work.

  • Jonathan

Co-owner, retail genius and hat wearer. Jonathan is the man on the other end of the phone, and is our wiz with sizing advice. If you've ordered online from Jump the Gun, you probably know him already.

  • David

With over 8 years at Jump the Gun, and another 40 years in retail experience, David has seen it all and worn it all. He's worked everywhere from Take 6 to Harrod's so we're glad to have nabbed him here at JTG. He doesn't look half bad in a suit either.
